The History of Monkey Festival

Monkey Festival at Lopburi is the grand annual event that becomes the eye-catching for the Thai and foreigners all over the world. It started from the local man named Yongyuth Kitwatananusont, known as “Yee Lopburi Inn”. He use monkey as the logo of this hotels and the business has been good. So he would like to return back to the land of Lopburi especially monkeys regarding as sacred monkey at the city shrine. It has been 21 years that Lopburi monkey was fed with various kind of food on Chinese table set to ensure every monkeys are full.

The objectives of setting up this yearly monkey festival are:

  1. To take good care of Lopburi monkey which regarding as the province’s mascot
  2. To enhance Lopburi tourism to both Thai and foreigners

The first Lopburi monkey festival began on Sunday, November 25th, 1989. There were 35 Chinese tables of abundant food divided in 3 areas; Phra Prang Sam Yord, City Shire and downtown building ares. The monkey were amazed and stunned. At that very first time, the past prime minister M.R. Kukrit Pramoj honourly came to open this ever first monkey party here at Lopburi.

In every years, the themes of the party and the food have been changed to make it special and different. For example, the biggest world record Chinese table monkey party, Around Thailand monkey party, the longest buffet monkey party, and sky-driving monkey party.

Apart from the monkey festival, there are many interesting activities such as monkey food parade, creative arts competition, performance of youth, Thai music performance, dancing performance, sky-driving, etc.

22nd Monkey Festival, Lopburi Thailand

This year, the monkey festival will be held on the 28th of November 2010. The festival will begin at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Phra Prang Sam Yord, Lopburi province, under the theme “The Monkeys feed Monkeys. There are many fruits and vegetables including monkey’s favorite food e.g. Thai dessert, sweet, boiled egg and carbonate drink for the monkeys. Moreover, Phra Prang Sam Yord will be carefully decorated according to the monkey’s preference.

In addition, there’s performance from the Collage of Dramatic Arts Lopburi, creative art competition “Art for Monkey” from the Thepsatri Rajabhat University. For the participants of the festival, there are foods provided into 3 rounds. The time slots are at 10 a.m., 12 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.

Beside the monkey festival at Phra Prang Sam Yord and the surrounding areas, starving monkeys in the flooding areas all over Thailand will be receiving food as well.

This year, we hope that the monkey festival will be entertaining and enjoyable for both Thai and foreign tourists which will stimulate Thailand’s tourism and yield positive affects to Thai people.
